I heard Frou Frou on the radio 6 and the song Flicks was lovely. Check the link, Google are at last doing music. Then I realised that that first track is that song that’s off that film Garden State which is nice also so I bought it from iTunes and look! all the music files are nasty .m4p format. Silly iTunes; information wants to be free.
I just watched the first four chapters of Breaking the Waves which is heartbreaking. I missed clever Richard Dawkins on television last night but he will be uknova’d I hope.
My favourite funny Mr Stewart Lee is on the radio 4 at 23:15hrs tonight speaking his piece Pea Green Boat with his mouth for your tiny shining box to resonate into your quizzically rosy lugs. I excitedly went to see him perform it in the Traverse and it was funny and disturbing and knocked you sideways like a paralysed clown shot at you from a cannon.
You can probably miss it and still listen to it later though.

Frou > I have the album. Tis most pleasing. It wants to be your friend.
R6 > I want a DAB effort. An oldskool Roberts one.
Breaking the waves > Sounds delightful :/
Dawkins > interestink…….
Shrigley > Was it you who wrote something about him? I couldn’t find it when I searched the archives. Anyway, I got the book and it’s very, very, very funny. Indeed.

I heard some awesome danceable music at a goth club in Dublin the other night. Will have to do some further research.

Was gutted not to get into the Russian Disco so ended up there instead. Prolly for the best.

Just to point out you can see Dawkins illustrating from first principles the absurdities and dangers of faith on uknova.
It’s worth it for the images of Lourdes: critically ill people on hospital trolleys, hoping for a miracle cure, unbelievably arranged in the shape of a crucifix.

Or for less made-for-TV flashiness a must-watch is Jonathan Miller’s brief history of disbelief.

I’ve been to Lourdes, it was excellent fun. Didn’t wait in any queues to see shrines or be cured but did buy some ace glow in the dark virgins.

You know you can’t read those without registering, Air?

Yep, uknova needs a login; it’s worth the effort.
Pea green boat can be ripped using this URL (1 min of crap before the start):

Ah. Uknova only opens up for new users now and again. I’ll mail you my login.
Having just looked them over again, Miller’s history of disbelief really kicks the ass out of anything else you might watch on the subject. Almost certainly the most intelligent piece of television you will ever see.

Are awesome I agree.
“Death Cab for Cutie has announced details of their upcoming “DIRECTIONS”, an innovative anthology of 12 short films inspired by each song on the bandÂ’s acclaimed album PLANS. Every song will be delivered by a different director. 11 of the videos will be unveiled one by one at http://www.deathcabforcutie.com. The first of which will be ‘Marching Bands of Manhattan’ on January 23.”
Also you can rip some tunes from their site to whet appetites:
• Wait
• A Movie Script Ending
• Song for Kelly Huckaby
• For What Reason
Will go and download some Styrofoam…

They’re ‘torrent’ files. They just tell your computer how to find other people who have copies to download.
To download torrents I use Azureus. You will need to install Java if not installed already.
Or you might try BitTorrent if that sounds like hassle.

It doesn’t sound like hassle, I just didn’t know what a torrent file was and I doubt my computer would cope with them. Thanks anyway. NB/ my computer is stupid. I am not. Thank you.

I am stupider than most computers but my comp can’t shut down by itself and can’t stay awake for more than about 4 hours without crashing out.

Absolutely agree. I don’t think I’ve ever believed in God but I’ve always been fascinated with all the rituals that religious people have.
I am seduced by aesthetics, thus I am more drawn to Catholicism than, say, Presbyterianism, though the religious stuff means nothing to me.
I never minded going to church when I was very young. I liked the wine, holding candles, and watching how odd people looked when they took it all seriously (especially people who I thought were old enough to know better).
I don’t get why believing in God can make life more bearable (what some people have said to me). I know this is it and it doesn’t bother me. It’s amazing to be alive and the chances of being here are so small that I’m damn well going to enjoy the only time I’ve got.
If there’s a next life then it will come as a bloody good surprise
Is art a religion?
Can I be an atheist Catholic Communist?

The 11 most common misconceptions about atheists:
1. Atheists hate god/are jealous of theists
2. Atheists are arrogant and don’t want anything “superior” to them
3. Atheists have never experienced religion
4. Atheists have never read/don’t understand the bible
5. Atheists just don’t want to receive the truth
6. Atheists are bitter/angry
7. Atheists just don’t want to admit they sin
8. All atheists support abortion/evolution/liberal politics/communism/fascism/etc
9. Atheists are gay
10. Atheists want to destroy/limit religion
11. Atheists think they know everything

The thing is, I equate religion with myth. I don’t mind hearing about it as long as I am not expected to believe it.
We had a class on dealing with myths in archives. What do you do if someone comes in looking for evidence to prove that they are related to Robert the Bruce (sorry Spunky) or that King Arthur was actually Jesus, or whatever. We have to convince them that their less famous (and possibly real) ancestor might have had an interesting life too and that they should research that instead.
Anyway, I’m rambling, my problem is that you can never ever suggest that Christianity might be a big myth. There are at least 4 practicing Christians on my course and so while we talked about Robin Hood, King Arthur and Braveheart I wasn’t brave enough to mention the biggest myth of all.
