Did you know you can get a free Java J2EE server at myjavaserver?
Or that you can use Subversion to keep a master copy of all your personal files and check them out to laptops and USB keys for hot synchronised action?
Or that PodUtil lets you dump your complete iPod contents to any computer (I just restored my entire music collection from the wee white devil after a hard disc crash)?
Or that the cross-platform media player VLC can play any movie file, including corrupted and incomplete ones (e.g. dodgy torrents)?
Or that WordPress is now streets ahead of Movable Type? Time for a migration I think. What the hell, we only have 880 entries and 2,300 comments to mess up…

MPlayer is my stolenmoviesplayer du jour, some nice keyboard controls and command line options give it the edge. VLC is fantastic for Emule downloads preview – quite often plays 1% completed.
On another note, had a 300GB disk die on me. The second Maxtor Diamond to go within a year… and both less than a year old.
Support is nonsense too, so may be steering away from this particular manufacturer now…

Don’t get me started on focknig Maxtor. My 120GB died taking my ENTIRE LIBRARY OF DIGITAL IMAGES with it.
A near physical loss, bearing in mind it was my only way of remembering exactly how I’ve punished myself over the last few years…

Is it just me or is there no way of posting images with Moveable Type without typing out the codes each time (what I’ve been doing but then I’m a bit thick)?

VLC can not cope with movies that have had jam meared all over them.

Sorry I didn’t mean to post 2 comments then – please ignore or even delete the first one.

Sorry CJ, MT is pretty barbaric and gives you little help. You do have UPLOAD rights though, to store stuff on this site:
1. save image to PC
2. UPLOAD in Movable Type
3. select ‘embedded’ and ‘show me the HTML’
Then it gives you the necessaries.

Noty quite. I was connected over a dialup so noticed the typo after I’d hit post, but before it had finished correcting – so corrected it and hit post again hoping I would have done it in time, but seeing as how I work in computers I really knew it doesn’t work like that, but I did it anyway.

Computers are quite rubbish really. Not as bad as doctors though. Oh yeah, just remembered what I was going to talk about.

I don’t even have a doctor atm.
Digital preservation is quite a fascinating topic. I always want to know exactly where my files are stored though, where is Subversion’s physical repository? Is it safe? etc. I’m cautious.
Remember when all those blogs got wiped out in 2004 or something? I thought that was quite funny.
Shit losing your photos though

Ah no, alas free space on the web is still a thing of the future (maybe). This is for storing stuff on your own PC and making sure it syncs properly.

Ah ok, my PC is dying a slow death, s’why I don’t trust it.
