Lately I have taken to collecting unusual records. As I own no record player, I prefer to gaze at their sleeves, stroke their grooved surfaces and whisper gentle loving words to them. Today I found a good one.
But first a digression. Identifying old TV shows that you barely remember is fun. The classic imported japanese series Star Fleet – see link for fantastic fan site – evaded me for years before I finally spotted some clips on the etherweb.
To stand a chance of seeing this old stuff again incidentally you could do worse than the Rare TV store. A bit like UK Nova, but rarer stuff (and cheap rather than free).
The record I bought today then was the totally bonkers Star Fleet Project EP by – wait for it – Brian May and Eddie van Halen. In between fertilising his hair and fellating Freddie, Brian would sit down with his son and watch the show. His son urged him to cover the theme tune and a legend was born. Along with the theme cover are two blues jams recorded in one take.
Maybe one day I’ll be able to actually listen to it.

I bought a 12″ version of Car Wash Hair by Mercury Rev from a record store in Camden a couple of years ago. I’ve never played it at home as I don’t own a record player either but this hasn’t stopped me scouring eBay for other unplayable gems.

I never knew that! Blimey. Mind you, my vinyl collection was about 200 strong before I got myself a record player…
And no, I’m evidently not getting much of my Part 3 done. Pah.
