if you look at someone when they’re sleeping
they’re dreaming
and you can still see their eyes move
behind their eyelids
at first glance their eyes are closed
but if you look closely there’s
a pale disc of raised flesh
where their eyes are looking
and as they glance around left and right and up and down
you realise that the people asleep are always staring
blindly and madly
at things that aren’t there
