I’ve read more than once today that an Islamic state might be more suitable than a western democracy in Iraq. It makes some sense; the Iraqis are not westerners, after all. Thoughtful if slightly over-titled update from the Big G.
There’s a great article over at the libertarian alliance pointing out the over-simplification of the vision for a new Iraq. The point being that democracy does not equal freedom; in fact democracy isn’t all that great even on its own merits.

I like jelly tots. They’re far better than tutti frooties, which tend to get stuck in my teeth. I’m not entirely convinced than an Islamic state is what a country like Iraq needs after a regime like Saddam Hussein’s.. Strikes me that its kinda like swapping one kind of totalitarianism for another, in its harsh, unforgiving rule of the people, its draconian approach to crime, and contempt for the female of the species. I mean, by nature, no form of political rule is ever gonna be perfect, but Islam seems far from right to me..
Isn’t that a bit of a bizarre opinion for a humanist, btw…? Living your life by the divine rule of ‘pixies, bearded or otherwise’?
