film de merde

Aaron has done a good job of reporting the weekend activities, most of which I was involved in so there shall be no update from me regarding this.

Instead, I shall do you all a huge favour by telling you not to even consider watching Baise Moi. For some bizarre reason I thought this film was going to be good – I also recall Aaron, Paul and I were planning a special ‘Baise Moi Cinema Trip’ but this never happened due to the extremely limited release the film received over here.

Now I’m all for artistic freedom and the individual rights of a person when choosing what or what not to see – in other words I am and always have been completely against censorship in any form. Maybe this is why I thought the film had some merit, as the more high profile cases of late have definitely been worth checking out, including this and (to some extent) this. Oh, how wrong I was…

Baise Moi is a pointless exercise in stylised violence and sex which – to me – served no purpose whatsoever. The main goal of the filmmakers seemed to be to shock, and even then they couldn’t really pull if off… I was more just embarrased by the nonsense I was seeing on screen, such as sticking a gun up someones rectum. If you want to be shocked, perhaps it would be worth your while checking out Salo or Cannibal Holocaust. Although I hasten to add that there isn’t really that much artistic merit in the latter…! But then again – in my opinion – it provides the premise for an extremely successful (and also very good) film of late.

Badly written, badly acted, badly shot… you could say that the main characters are reacting against the way they – and women in general – are treated by men (expecially in movies) but it simply doesn’t work. There doesn’t seem to be any moral consequence of their actions whatsoever and the fact that they will kill anyone – male or female – doesn’t convince…

Anyway, enough rambling. If you don’t believe me check out the universally bad reviews
