Alright scumbags, I need some advice…
I have finally decided to buy a computer as I feel the need for one again. The time has come to embrace what I do for a living, and set up an Oracle 9i database at home. Just think, free reign over my database… drool.
Just kidding.
But seriously, I am going to buy one but have lost touch somewhat over the past few years. I’m in no way after the fastest, best machine out there, I just want one purely for entertainment. I want a similar setup to Aarons, i.e. having my music on the bastard, and I reckon I will probably also use it to fuck around with my guitar and do some recording. And also play games. Aaron, I will probably need to discuss this with you but I’m pretty open to anyones ideas…
Cheers.
P.S. You’ll notice I used the term computer. It doesn’t neccessarily have to be a PC, I personally like the look of Macs as well but know feck all. Apart from they’re more expensive in which case a PC may be the better option.

OMG!! an open minded IT boy. Well in my opinion, Apple Macintosh computers do the same job as PC’s but they make it look beautiful. The Platform is refreshingly non clunky, they are just eye candy.. as designed by the lovely Mr. Jonathan Ive. My choice desktop wise, would be the new imac, which is just out. 17 inch TFT display a 1GHZ G4 processor which, believe me, is so damn effecient, you’ll cream your underwear. Also comes complete with the new OSX interface, which after a bit of tweeking, combines stunning good looks with a rocksteady UNIX back end. As far as what you want it to do goes, its perfect for all the above. And iTunes 2 is the best music program in the world. Period. Lets you rip mix and burn, as well as store a zillion MP3′s and access any playlist, or specific tune at the touch of a button. And I could sort you out with THE most amazing sound recording software on the planet. Orbital and underworld both use it, its a joy to fiddle with, and it’s amazingly powerful. Costs 5 figures mind, but I have all the toys..
Go on stu. You know it makes sense. Join the gang. And I mean, you cant deny, it is beautiful.

and your nearest apple shop is either john lewis, or scotsys in newington. Both are great.
(jill braces herself for a torrent of abuse from Mr. A. Microsoft Bell.. dont listen to him stu. )

m’kaaaaay…. but apple’s components are all made by apple.. Although they’re thinking about introducing intel CPU’s – whatever. I think they should distance themselves as far as possible from that. Their marketing has managed to make the brand almost like a designer label. For successful living, eh? I dont care about the geekery. Mac’s are just sexXxy.. and I defy anyone who thinks diff.
infinate loop – the apple story. Available on amazon for about 20 bucks. a good read.

*sigh*, here we go then.
> OS X
It’s FreeBSD UNIX with the scary bits hidden. I honestly think this is great. I personally don’t fancy spending $$$ on effectively only the third revision of a brand new OS though. From what I read 10.2 is *starting* to become long-term usable.
> apple’s components are all made by apple
Warning! Competition is Good. That’s why Apple are using the PC’s NVidia GeForce for their graphics.
> intel
Agreed, marketing over substance. Athlons better. Hey, competition! A choice of processors!
> I dont care about the geekery. Mac’s are just sexXxy.. and I defy anyone who thinks diff
Ah well, there goes the reasoned debate then.
I *want* to do geeky stuff on my computer; I don’t want to fuck it.
Anyway…here are the reasons I’ll be buying another PC:
1. I want to choose exactly the hardware components I want (3d, sound, processor, monitor, etc.), and get up-to-date drivers for them. I want to be able to rip out my 2x DVD-RW drive and whack in a brand new 8/16/32x one as soon as it comes out. I want lots of processing power.
2. $$$ x 10. I don’t need and don’t want to pay for (i) ease of use or (ii) a pretty case.
3. I want to be able to run Red Hat, Mandrake, SuSE, Windows, BeOS and whatever the hell other OS I fancy.
4. I want the latest games. I want to play Counterstrike, online. I want to play Grand Theft Auto 3. I don’t want to wait until someone maybe or never ports it to my OS.
5. Most importantly, I personally love ‘bleeding edge’ (urgh!) technology: all of hardware, internet and enterprise software and games. Macintosh is a niche market, and hence is second priority for anything important happening in those areas of interest.
Your priorities may vary. To be quite honest I think you’d do very well with an iMac.

true. true. noted. true. fair enough. Depends on your perspective. I’m not going to try and argue with someone whole blatantly knows far more on the subject than me. Maybe i’m just a backward, heavily prejudiced member of the BTO (artskool) – a sub genre of the orthodoxy that you missed, Mr. B. and the subgenre with which I am discernably involved, perhaps.. individual threads for individual heads, eh?

I can see why art students and the like would go the Mac – spoke to Jenny about this last night. But for sheer gaming opportunities it’s gonna have to be a PC – plus I can spend about a grand less…

Just don’t do this to get ‘shit hot’ performance.
