Scruffy bankers who pioneered “dressing down” in the City have been ordered back to spit-and-polish basics by their new manager, a former captain of Gurkhas. The Californian dress code has gone too far, according to David Hitchcock, the head of corporate access at JP Morgan. Mr Hitchcock said dressing down has bred an insensitive and unprofessional generation who alienate clients by playing with Gameboys at meetings. It was time for a “shave, shoe shine and steam iron.”

A one-armed lifeguard has been named as one of the best in his job in Chile. Francisco Aguilera Morales, 48, the official lifeguard of San Carlos Beach, lost his right arm above the elbow in a childhood accident. But it hasn’t stopped him working as a lifeguard for the last 14 years, and now he has now been singled out by Las Ultimas Noticias online as one of Chile’s best. Mr Morales, nicknamed The Wolf for his bravery, said: “I grab their neck with what’s left of my right arm and swim back using the left arm. Once I saved 13 people one by one, it took me two hours and I did all on my own. People applauded me.”

A US television station is to broadcast a two-hour special of out-takes Michael Jackson selected from his interview with Martin Bashir. The show, called “Michael Jackson, Take Two: The Interview They Wouldn’t Show You”, is due to air in the US on Rupert Murdoch’s Fox TV on February 20.
