Well, the holiday period did exactly what it said on the tin: nearly two solid weeks of hedonism, hilarity and heroic intoxicant abuse. I’ve snorted enough trifle to last a lifetime (no hundreds and thousands mind you… nothing hardcore). The compulsory, near-constant wine drinking. And smearing brandy butter under the eyelids? From now on I’m leaving that strictly to the young ‘uns.
The wee man’s birthday itself was spent back in Arbroath with the folks, ahh. On the material possessions front I find myself up a watch, Bill Hicks stuff, Low tickets and Band of Brothers. On the other hand I’m significantly down on brain cells, motivation to work and credit card balances. Makes ya wonder about the true meaning of Xmas, don’ it?
I did find a spare evening amidst the chaos to take in The Two Towers, which was utterly absorbing. The guy in the Gollum suit is excellent. I’m particularly relieved that Legolas’ “50-50 grind” skateboarding scene was kept true to Tolkien’s original. You should see the half-pipes in The Undying Lands dude!
Hogmanay in Edinburgh was a landmark affair as usual. The original plan of paying daft prices for a club night was swiftly abandoned, in favour of traversing several kerazy parties and consuming organ-damaging quantities of anything within reach. A top night out : ) Survived until around 9am when the basic life-preserving instincts kicked in and a taxi seemed sensible.
Lastly, two fantastic but unrelated sites for ya: Philip Jackson’s dark toon pipingrad, and possibly the greatest motorbike game ever (remember Kikstart II?).
